A hauntingly rich and moist black velvet cake that’s perfect for Halloween parties! Dark cocoa blends with a tender crumb and creamy frosting for a dessert that’s both spooky and irresistible.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups sugar
  • ½ cup dark cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Black gel food coloring
  • Cream cheese frosting (for filling & topping)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line cake pans.

  • In a bowl, whisk flour, cocoa, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

  • In another bowl, mix buttermilk, oil, eggs, vanilla, and food coloring.

  • Combine wet and dry ingredients until smooth.

  • Pour into pans and bake for 30–35 minutes. Cool completely.

  • Frost with cream cheese frosting and decorate with spooky flair.

Notes

Add Halloween sprinkles, candy eyes, or dark chocolate drips for extra frightful fun! You can also swap cream cheese frosting with buttercream if preferred.
